Parks and places for children to play in Glyncoch

Progress

Time and time again, the Glyncoch community have identified parks for children to play, as the number one priority for improvements to our village. Getting a new park has been quite a bit more difficult than anticipated because the council’s budget for parks is very limited and to date, Glyncoch has not been a priority. However, the officers at the parks department in the council have been working with the GAFA group to support the Glyncoch Community to prepare plans for play areas and facilities and look for funding, whilst they try to mobalise their own resources to improve facilities in Glyncoch.

The actions to date have been:

  1. Parents at Cefn Primary school have identified an area by Clyton crescent as an area that is ideal for a new park. They have also cleaned up the area, getting black from head to toe in the process!
  2. Designs and costings are currently being drawn up which will enable the group to consult with residents and negotiate investment from council / funders
  3. The GAFA group have raised £5000 from the Communities First Trust Fund which will fund two additional pieces of play equipment at the park in Cefn Lane
  4. Letters have been written to Kim Howells MP, Leighton Andrews, AM, Christine Chapman AM, and the Council’s cabinet member that covers parks.

‘The process of getting better play facilities in Glyncoch is proving to be quite a challenge’ said Hannah Gulwel, chair of GAFA ‘however we are working hard at it and trying every avenue. We will get there in the end! All parents, children and residents in general are welcome to join our group, we need all the help we can get’.

Next steps are to:

  1. Consult with residents by Clayton crescent
  2. Negotiate investment from the council for area of land by Clayton Crescent
  3. Continue to seek funding for play facilities
  4. Whilst working towards getting funding for fixed play facilities, improve the woodland between Porchers and Garth Avenue as a community amenity to be enjoyed by families (subject to consultation with surrounding residents)
